The Decatur Morgan Heart Failure Clinic provides specialized, patient-centered care to help individuals manage heart failure and improve quality of life.
Our experienced team - David Smull, DO and Danielle Johnston, CRNP - partners closely with patients and caregivers to deliver individualized education and counseling on chronic disease management, comprehensive medication management and personalized diet and exercise guidance.
Services also include fluid monitoring with IV diuretic therapy, as indicated, evaluation and coordination of device therapies and ongoing support through every stage of the disease. To help prevent complications and readmissions, the clinic offers prompt follow-up after hospitalization or periods of instability, along with streamlined referrals and close collaboration with other providers to ensure seamless, coordinated care.

Our Team
David Smull, DO
David Smull, DO is a board-certified cardiologist with advanced training in heart failure and cardiac transplant care. He brings comprehensive expertise across the full spectrum of cardiovascular medicine, with clinical interests that include advanced heart failure management, cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterization, clinical general cardiology, pulmonary hypertension and the prevention and treatment of congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease.
Dr. Smull earned his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University and completed fellowship training in Cardiology at Loyola University Hospital in Illinois and Columbia University in New York, gaining experience in complex and advanced cardiac care. He is dedicated to providing evidence-based, patient-centered treatment and works closely with patients and care teams to deliver high-quality cardiovascular care tailored to each individual’s needs.
Danielle Johnston, CRNP
Danielle Johnston, CRNP is a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in acute and critical care settings. She brings more than a decade of nursing and advanced practice experience to the Decatur Morgan Heart Failure Clinic, including five years as a registered nurse and seven years as a nurse practitioner.
Danielle earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and is certified as an AGACNP. Her clinical interests include heart failure, pulmonary care, critical care, medical-surgical medicine and infectious disease. Prior to joining the Decatur Morgan Heart Failure Clinic, she practiced in the UAB Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), caring for complex and critically ill patients.
Danielle is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care and partnering closely with patients and families to support long-term health and disease management. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their young daughter.
